Frequently Asked Questions

Where do your photographs come from?

Our archive contains more than 15,000 original colour slides and negatives covering over 20 countries.

Much of the collection was assembled by three generations of our family, beginning with photographs taken by my grandfather during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. We have also acquired original photographic collections from other photographers and estates. You can read more on our About page.

Are your photographs genuine, or are they AI-generated?

All photographs sold by Places Remembered originate from genuine vintage colour slides or negatives in our original photographic archive. They depict real places and scenes as they were photographed decades ago.

We do not artificially colourise black-and-white photographs. Every image was originally captured in colour, rather than having colours added later using AI or other digital techniques.

Many of our photographs have been digitally restored using modern software, including AI-assisted enhancement, to improve sharpness, colour, brightness and clarity, and to reduce dust, scratches and other imperfections.

Our aim is restoration, not reinvention. We do not deliberately add or remove people, buildings, vehicles or other features, or dramatically alter scenes simply to make them more appealing. We may brighten a dull sky, enhance faded colours or improve the clarity of an image, but we always strive to remain faithful to the original photograph, preserving its historical character rather than creating an idealised version of the past.

Although AI-assisted enhancement can occasionally affect small details, we take care to remain as faithful as possible to the original image.

History is important to us. We’re not trying to change it, but to restore it.

Does every photograph have a historical description?

Yes. Each photograph is accompanied by an informative historical description explaining what it shows and providing background about the location, buildings, businesses, landmarks or events depicted.

Where relevant, we also explore how the location has changed and what happened to the buildings or attractions featured.

Why does the archive only feature London?

Our initial published collection concentrates on historic London, with photographs dating from the 1950s to the 1980s.

We plan to expand across England, Scotland, Wales and the rest of the United Kingdom before introducing photographs from other countries represented in our archive. Check back often for the latest updates.

Can I suggest a location or subject?

Absolutely. We have thousands of photographs awaiting restoration and publication.

If there’s a particular town, street, landmark, attraction or historical subject you’d like to see featured, please contact us. Although we cannot guarantee that every location is represented, suggestions are always welcome.

Can I purchase the photographs as prints?

Yes. Our photographs are available as premium matte posters, ready-to-hang framed prints and canvases.

The available options and prices are displayed on each photograph’s product page.

What print formats are available?

We offer three formats:

Premium Matte Poster: Printed on heavyweight 200 gsm matte paper with a smooth, non-reflective finish. Supplied unframed in a rolled tube.
