Timber yards, warehouses and factories line both banks, reflecting the canal’s long history as an important freight route serving the Surrey Commercial Docks. The peaceful waterway seen here was once a vital artery for London’s timber trade, but within a few years the canal had been filled in as part of the creation of Burgess Park, transforming the entire area beyond recognition.
